Addressing the Joint Sitting of Parliament on the first day of the Budget Session, President Pratibha Patil said the 11th Plan period will see expansion in the number of technical institutions. Eight new Indian Institutes of Technology, 20 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology, seven new Indian Institutes of Management and two Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research in addition to the three in Pune, Kolkata and Mohali, will be set up, she said.

After Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the nation's premier IITs may see a hike in tuition fees, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday. Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh said the Standing Committee of IIT Council (SCIC) has recommended an increase in the tuition fee for B Tech and M Tech courses. The Board of Governors (BoG) of six IIMs located at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode had decided to increase the fees of the PGP.

Tulsi Tanti, the founder chairman and managing director of Suzlon Energy and a renowned expert on renewable energy, died due to cardiac arrest on Saturday evening. Tanti, 64, who was also the chairman of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association, was on his way to Pune from Ahmedabad when he suffered a cardiac arrest, a company official said. He is survived by his daughter Nidhi and son Pranav.
